Omschrijving van de vacature
Department of Clinical Sciences - Clinical Trials Unit
More than 500 staff members at the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) contribute every day to improving the health of millions of people worldwide. Our researchers conduct more than 100 scientific projects in the fields of tropical medicine and international health. Our teaching staff welcomes more than 500 professionals from around the world each academic year to attend our highly regarded medical courses. Tens of thousands of travel and STI consultations take place in our clinic each year, and our internationally recognized reference laboratories examine many hundreds of thousands of samples.
There is only one way we can accomplish these very diverse tasks: thanks to a great passion for our mission.
To further strengthen this mission, the Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) plays a key role by collaborating with clinical researchers at ITM and partner institutions. The CTU is responsible for setting up and conducting clinical trials and other human research studies that address health challenges both in Belgium and in resource-limited settings in the South. To support the increasing number of projects coordinated by the CTU — as well as other research activities within the Department of Clinical Sciences — we are expanding our biostatistics team.
This position offers the opportunity to work with a variety of statistical methodologies and engage in research on different infectious diseases. If you are passionate about contributing to international health research and eager to join a dedicated and motivated team, you might be the colleague we are looking for!
Assignment:
- You will join the Clinical Trials Unit and provide statistical support for clinical trials and other research studies conducted by ITM’s Department of Clinical Sciences, including those led by researchers, PhD, and Master's students.
- You contribute to study protocols by advising on trial design, sample size calculations, randomization methods, and statistical analysis plans.
- You develop, test, and implement statistical analysis programs using R, SAS or Stata.
- You conduct statistical analyses, interpret clinical data and present findings in comprehensive statistical reports.
- You will draft the statistical methods and results sections for study reports and scientific publications.
- You collaborate closely with CTU members (e.g., data managers, clinical trial scientists) and ITM researchers, providing statistical guidance throughout the research lifecycle.
- You participate in Research Consortia and Trial Management Groups, providing expertise on study design and methodology.
- You ensure all statistical activities comply with ICH-GCP guidelines and ITM’s standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- You engage in educational and training activities in statistics and clinical trial methodology, both at ITM and with partner institutions, including those in low- and middle-income countries.
Gewenst profiel
Profile:
- You hold a Master’s degree in biostatistics, applied statistics or a related field.
- Working experience in biostatistics is highly valued.
- Good knowledge of statistical methods relevant to clinical research, such as survival analysis, longitudinal data analysis, generalized linear models, and handling of missing data.
- Solid understanding of ICH-GCP guidelines and related statistical requirements for clinical trials.
- Proficiency in statistical software R. Good knowledge of SAS, or Stata is an asset; hands-on experience in a clinical trial context is particularly valued.
- Effective communicator with strong presentation skills and an interest in mentoring and teaching, including through international collaboration with partners in low- and middle-income countries.
- Ability to clearly communicate statistical concepts and findings in accessible English to non-statistical audiences.
- Excellent knowledge of English. Knowledge of professional French and Dutch will be valued.
