Scientific coordinator mpox outbreak project

Omschrijving van de vacature

Department of Clinical Science - Clinical Emerging Infectious Diseases

Introduction

The Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) in Antwerp is a leading institution dedicated to the advancement and dissemination of scientific knowledge on infectious diseases and global health, with a special focus on low- and middle-income countries.

Outbreak research and pandemic preparedness are top priorities at ITM, which has a long and rich history of studying emerging infectious diseases. Our philosophy is to conduct high-quality research through equal and sustainable partnerships with collaborators in the Global South. This approach allows us to tackle emerging diseases in the South, while learning from our partners to better prepare populations worldwide, including in the North.

One of ITM's key areas of expertise is mpox, a disease we have extensively studied through collaborations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and during the 2022 global outbreak in Belgium. As part of our ongoing work on mpox, Professor Laurens Liesenborghs' team of the unit of Clinical Emerging Infectious Diseases in the Clinical Sciences Department is currently investigating a large mpox outbreak in South Kivu.

In collaboration with our Congolese partners, we are setting up clinical and epidemiological studies to better understand this outbreak, inform response strategies, and halt its spread. The outbreak is occurring in a difficult-to-reach and impoverished area. Working in these remote regions presents both scientific and organizational challenges. Therefore, we are seeking a motivated individual with a scientific background and a hands-on, 'yes we can' mentality to help lead this project to success.

  • Under supervision of Laurens Liesenborghs, you will be responsible for the project coordination of the mpox outbreak research project,

  • You will be responsible for reporting on the project to funders in collaboration with the ITM’s supporting services
  • You will give scientific input, help with protocol development, manuscript writing and data analysis
  • You will be based in Antwerp but will have the possibility to do short missions to the DRC, including to remote locations.

Waarom 11
