In april 2024 probeert de Iraanse filmmaker Sepideh Farsi Gaza binnen te raken, maar ze wordt tegengehouden aan de grens. Wat begint als een mislukte reis, groeit uit tot een uitzonderlijke film zodra ze contact legt met Fatma “Fatem” Hassona, een jonge fotojournaliste uit Gaza. Via maandenlange videogesprekken wordt Fatma Farsi’s ogen en stem in een verwoest gebied.
We zien een vrouw die lacht, rouwt, schrijft, fotografeert en blijft dromen terwijl de bommen vallen. Haar foto’s en hun gesprekken schetsen een zeldzaam intiem beeld van het dagelijks leven onder beleg: hoop naast angst, creativiteit naast vernietiging. Meer dan 200 dagen houden de twee vrouwen contact – tot Fatma en haar familie omkomen bij een Israëlische luchtaanval, één dag nadat de film werd geselecteerd voor Cannes.
PUT YOUR SOUL ON YOUR HAND AND WALK is zo zowel een portret als een herdenking. Het toont Fatma’s veerkracht, haar poëzie en haar blik op de wereld, en verandert tegelijk in een krachtig eerbetoon aan alle stemmen die in Gaza worden gesmoord. Een documentaire die onontkoombaar actueel en diep menselijk is.

In April 2024, Iranian filmmaker Sepideh Farsi tries to enter Gaza but is stopped at the border. What begins as a failed journey turns into an extraordinary film when she connects with Fatma “Fatem” Hassona, a young photojournalist from Gaza. Through months of video calls, Fatma becomes Farsi’s eyes and voice in a devastated region.
We see a woman who laughs, mourns, writes, photographs, and continues to dream even as bombs fall. Her photos and their conversations offer a rare, intimate glimpse of daily life under siege: hope alongside fear, creativity alongside destruction. For more than 200 days, the two women stay in touch—until Fatma and her family are killed in an Israeli airstrike, just one day after the film was selected for Cannes.
PUT YOUR SOUL ON YOUR HAND AND WALK is both a portrait and a memorial. It captures Fatma’s resilience, her poetry, and her perspective on the world, while serving as a powerful tribute to all the voices silenced in Gaza. A documentary that feels urgently relevant and deeply human.

Sulaiman Saleh - Sulaiman Saleh is a communicator, lecturer and researcher exploring in Intercultural Communication studies. Born in Gaza, studied in Malaysia, taught Media and Communication in Sweden, and now lives in Belgium. He’s part of Cinema Maximiliaan and a facilitator at Disarming Design, where art and social engagement meet.
