The debate over whether Israel is committing the crime of "apartheid" is raging ever more fiercely. In an event on September 21, 2022, 11.11.11 and CNCD-11.11.11 are inviting Palestinian, Israeli and international experts to discuss this important question and the current situation in the occupied Palestinian territory and Israel.

Over the past two years, leading Palestinian, Israeli and international human rights organizations, as well as the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territory, have concluded that Israel is guilty of the crime of apartheid. In May 2021, a new UN Commission of Inquiry was also established, whose mandate allows for the investigation of apartheid allegations.

In this public event on September 21, 2022, four experts, moderated by Middle East expert Brigitte Herremans (Ghent University) will delve deeper into the current context in the occupied Palestinian territory and in Israel, and into the apartheid debate. How does one define "apartheid" under international law? How do Palestinian and Israeli human rights organizations apply this international law framework to Israel's treatment of Palestinians? And what impact might the application of this framework have on the position and responsibilities of European countries such as Belgium?
