Young people have their say - Reclaim the city/earth report
Who has a say in what our city looks like?
Who actually decides what our city looks like? Squares, streets, parks… Although green public spaces are there for everyone, policymakers often decide only what actually takes shape. Young people—who themselves spend a great deal of time in these public spaces—rarely get a say. That's why, in early 2025, with the support of the Brussels-Capital Region, we launched the project Reclaim the Earth/City!
We're uncovering the experiences and needs of young people through a Brussels and international survey. The input from these studies is compiled in this report.
The report outlines how young people experience green and public spaces in Brussels, what barriers they perceive, and what they need to be involved. Their insights form the building blocks for concrete policy recommendations en inspiring examples from places that do things differently.
Curious about what young people in Brussels think about public space and how they want to redesign their city?
Spoiler: This is not a completion of the project, but a loud signal: young people want to help determine what a livable and inclusive city looks like.
With a special mention of Helena Schoofs, youth activist at 11.11.11, who led the research and writing of this report.
