I was born 24 years ago in Syria. The war broke out when I was 11. My family and I wanted to stay in Syria, but suddenly the Assad regime locked my father in prison, without trial. I could do nothing for him. Today I still don't know what happened to him, or if he is still alive.
I myself was held captive and tortured for a month when I was 15. My mother finally decided that we had no choice but to flee. The journey was terrible, but after weeks of misery we finally reached a refugee camp on the Turkish border. We had nothing left. Fortunately, the people of Olive Branch were there. Olive Branch is an organization founded by Syrian refugees. They work hard to offer perspective to fellow sufferers in Turkey. They receive support from 11.11.11.
They saved us. Today I still live in this camp. Last year I had the opportunity through Olive Branch to help people who lost everything in the devastating earthquake. Like little Ahmet, who didn't even have a winter coat after he and his family lost everything.
In the meantime, I am still a volunteer at Olive Branch and I support people on the run who arrive here completely distraught. Just like we were then.
