Bolivia's Brazil nut sector under scrutiny
Before the Brazil nut reaches us, it travels a long way: from the nut harvesters and factory workers, through processing and packaging companies abroad, to the supermarket in Belgium. It is a long international journey. value chain* where human rights are not always guaranteed. That is why FOS, together with ABVV Horval and the Bolivian labour organisations CNTACB and CIPCA SA, a large-scale investigation to map the abuses in the Bolivian Brazil nut sectorWe presented the results to involved companies that are also active in Belgium, such as Aldi and PepsiCo.
What seems?
Large-scale forced and child labor are commonplace in the nut harvesting process. In addition, workers can barely support their families on wages below the minimum wage. The companies involved are aware of these problems, which arise in the search for more profit. Yet nothing changes.
