Giving a voice to ordinary Congolese

In DR Congo, where freedom of expression is visibly deteriorating, Radio Maendeleo is holding its ground. They give a voice to ordinary Congolese, local communities, NGOs, human rights defenders, etc. In doing so, they strengthen democracy, denounce abuse and corruption, and raise awareness among young people about nonviolence.

Radio Maendeleo broadcasts 24 hours a day in French or Swahili. In their broadcasts they give space to local communities and NGOs and to Congolese citizens. Through their broadcasts they want to get the voice of the Congolese citizen to the government and they want to denounce abuse and corruption. The radio is a medium where many citizens get their information in DR Congo, which Radio Maendeleo uses by informing them about elections, which strengthens democracy. In addition, they also raise awareness among young people about nonviolence. Unemployed young people in particular are very susceptible to manipulation by dishonest politicians. With the awareness programs, Radio Maendeleo hopes to protect young people from this.
