MOCICC

Action and activism for the planet

The Movimiento Ciudadano frente al Cambio Climático (MOCICC) coalition brings together organizations and activists from different parts of the country. It contributes to climate justice and a sustainable social model. In recent years, MOCICC has campaigned for strong commitments from the Peruvian government on climate, including in the context of the Paris Agreement. It puts pressure on the government to fulfill these commitments and even make additional efforts.

National Climate Plan

MOCICC has contributed significantly to the design and implementation of a national climate plan. Thanks to an intensive campaign, the coalition has achieved that Peru has a (binding) climate law. In addition, it supports a number of local governments in various regions of the country in developing their own climate policy that meets local needs.

Actions and campaigns

With campaigns and awareness-raising actions, MOCICC makes the public aware of the causes and consequences of climate change. They publish an annual report on this. In cities such as Lima, they support, among other things, promotional actions for sustainable public transport and for ecological city gardens, in addition to actions regarding consumption and waste. In rural areas, they mainly focus on the protection of water sources, better management of water in general and an efficient development of infrastructure. MOCICC also develops educational packages for the member organisations and for schools. The coalition also involves young people in their fight against climate change. They have placed emphasis on training for 'activists'; young people receive more information about movements in other continents, forms of action, the importance of energy transition, etc. In the meantime, the actions of climate youth are also on the rise in Peru, and they are taking to the streets under the name #'Friday's for future' for a fair climate policy.

Worldwide

Internationally, MOCICC closely follows the annual climate negotiations, in alliance with networks and organizations from all over the world. The coalition tries to sharpen the positions of the Peruvian government and to increase the ambition. It also participates in international campaigns, such as the campaign to phase out the use of fossil fuels.

Results

Despite its limited resources and small team, MOCICC has put itself on the map in a short time and the government recognizes it as a discussion partner in various consultation bodies. Partly thanks to the campaigns of Mocicc, political parties feel obliged to integrate a policy on climate issues in their program.

In addition, MOCICC has managed to establish local committees and bring together organizations from all over the country.
