Expertise on financial and economic fair development

The Fundación Jubileo was founded as the Bolivian arm of the international campaign for debt cancellation in the year 2000. Over the years, the organization has increasingly taken up related themes in its quest for social and economic justice.

Fight against poverty and inequality

The Fundación Jubileo’s policy work starts with the collection of information on poverty, price trends, central government income and expenditure, and the situation of local authorities. The analysis and processing of these data is an important step in itself, as they are often non-existent or not made public. Based on this information, the Fundación develops alternative proposals for good economic management, which it promotes through the press or through direct collaboration with public institutions if they are open to it.

In recent years, the need for a reform of the fiscal system has been high on the agenda, in terms of financing development and redistribution. Furthermore, together with many other organizations, a diversification of economic activity has been advocated. Like other countries in the region, Bolivia remains highly dependent on the exploitation of natural resources, especially gas extraction and mining. Also exacerbated by the covid crisis, the state has incurred new debts in recent years, with a risk of a new debt crisis.

'Praise be to you'

Due to the good ties of the organization with the Catholic Church, it has privileged access to local communities. Fundación Jubileo supports them in various efforts to make progress in social, economic and ecological areas, based on their analyses, expertise and training. This need for support is particularly great in the Amazon region, with attention to the balance between economic and ecological needs. With the release of the Pope's famous encyclical 'Laudato Si', on the care of our common home, the earth, Jubileo uses this to sensitize public opinion and policy makers to the need for effective measures to protect nature, which forms the basis of survival for the majority of Bolivians.

Results

The expertise on financial and economic aspects of development policy earns Fundación Jubileo recognition at home and abroad. Its analyses are used by foreign donors and international institutions, such as the IMF and the World Bank. The organization has been on the lists of the most influential think tanks on good governance and transparency for several years.

Local authorities and social organisations concerned with local development processes also make permanent use of the Fundación Jubileo, through analyses, specific training or direct guidance.
