Brotherly Sharing
As a Flemish organisation for development cooperation, Broederlijk Delen wants to change the world. In a world where everyone has enough to eat. Where people have a voice and everyone is safe. A world where everyone likes to live, also in the future. A sustainable world without inequality. We realise our dream in different ways.
Mission
Broederlijk Delen strives for a sustainable world without inequality. Because there is enough for everyone. And yet people live in poverty.
Sharing and redistributing. And investing in the own plans of the poorest communities in the South. That is the solution for us.
Vision
Inequality in the world is increasing, even with economic growth. That growth has reached its limits. Broederlijk Delen opts for an alternative: "enough is good" instead of "never enough".
We do not do this alone. We want to be a broad solidarity movement, both in Flanders and worldwide. Together we build our dream of a world without inequality. We start from a long-term vision. We are convinced that this is the only way to achieve sustainable results.
How and where we work
In the South, Broederlijk Delen has a typical way of working. We focus on the plans of the local population against inequality. In order to realize these plans, we support initiatives of local organizations. We do not start projects ourselves.
Broederlijk Delen works together with some 123 partner organisations. We support these organisations with money. We share our knowledge, bring them together to exchange experiences and stimulate mutual networking. In this way, they are stronger as an organisation and stand up for their rights together.
We operate in 13 countries: 6 countries in Africa, 6 in Latin America and in Israel-Palestine.
In Flanders, Broederlijk Delen carries out political work, we influence policy, we raise awareness and we try to encourage action.
Domains
We advocate for system change, using redistribution as a lever to work towards that system change.
We work around three domains:
* political voice and participation
* global solidarity in motion
* raw materials and food systems
Inspiration source
Broederlijk Delen was founded in 1961 as an emergency aid organisation. The reason was the famine in Congo. The Catholic Church called for a donation during Lent for a people in need. After that, Broederlijk Delen evolved into an NGO that structurally engages in development cooperation.
The common thread throughout our work is our Christian inspiration. This inspiration is reflected in the choices we make. For example, we work with the poorest and most vulnerable population groups. In Flanders, we give Lent a contemporary interpretation. We call for putting aside the trend of 'more and more'. We advocate 'enough is good': the conscious choice for a life in which attention is paid to the carrying capacity of the earth and of each other.
