South and Southeast Asia Region
Discover our storiesIn South and Southeast Asia works 11.11.11 together with several large regional networks. Every day they fight for the climate and socio-economic justice. Because although the economy in the region is flourishing, inequality is increasing mercilessly and the environment is under considerable pressure. That can be done differently! 11.11.11 works together with organisations and networks that exert pressure on policy both regionally and internationally. Together we work towards a sustainable future for everyone in the region.
Our regional partners fight for:
Asia’s economic growth has brought a wave of new international trade agreements, including with the European Union. Proponents claim these deals help people in the Global South, but they are often based on starvation wages and exploitation, keeping profits in the hands of the corporate world and pushing local people further into poverty and inequality. 11.11.11 fights together with its partners for fair trade, so that everyone can participate.
The current fiscal model perpetuates inequality. Governments cut taxes on corporate profits to make their economies more attractive. But the losers are the governments themselves, who have less money to invest in essential services such as renewable energy, employment and the climate crisis. And the population, of course. Together with our partners, we stand up for fair taxation.
Extreme heat, water scarcity, floods. Asian countries and their most vulnerable inhabitants, such as women, farmers or indigenous peoples, are among the biggest victims of the climate crisis. Yet they are the least responsible for it. Together with our partners, we fight for climate justice. We sit at the negotiating tables to conclude new climate agreements and take action to put pressure. Our partner APMDD leads the international NGO coalition for climate justice and joins in banging on the table at the annual climate summit.
Our partners are pushing for policy with regional and international bodies such as the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the UN Climate Convention (UNFCCC), the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). They also support national networks working on climate, trade and finance, and engage in cross-regional agenda setting.
The baseline of 11.11.11 'Strength in numbers' is very much interwoven in the climate movement. A source of our strength is how many we are. Just look at our worldwide cycling actions for the climate. The government has to listen when we take to the streets in our thousands.
