Congo is a country of paradoxes. The country is brimming with natural resources and yet the population has to make do with very little. Numerous armed conflicts ravage the country, but the population shows a self-reliance and resilience that we can only greatly admire.

Even after the recent elections, the war in Eastern Congo continues unabated. All kinds of laws, arrests, show trials and intimidation further restrict civil society. And in the meantime, large multinationals, Congolese politicians and armed militias cannot keep their hands off the precious minerals, while the poor population continues to miss out on this wealth.

This is what our partners in Congo are fighting for:

In the difficult context of conflict, corruption and intimidation, our partners work every day to achieve better governance and democracy. They tirelessly strive for more and better participation of citizens in government and for a decentralization of power to local authorities. With the support of 11.11.11 they work to enforce fair elections, combat corruption, support women in their political participation and achieve the independence of the judiciary and the media.

Large multinationals, Congolese politicians and armed militias in particular are taking the profits from Congo's natural resources. The local population only experiences the disadvantages of mining or has to work for very low wages in dangerous conditions.

11.11.11partner IBGDH is committed to managing natural resources in a way that benefits local people. They document human rights violations and help people obtain compensation for the loss of their homes. They also advocate for national legislation on mining.
