What have we already achieved, together with many others?
During the annual Syria pledging conference in Brussels (May 2024), the EU, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Germany and the United States reaffirm that Syria remains unsafe for return, despite increasing pressure to designate parts of Syria as a “safe zone”. Belgium also announces during the conference that it will release 2024 million euros in support for the Syria region in 28.5.
The European Parliament will adopt a resolution in February 2024 reaffirming that Syria is not safe for return, and that neighbouring countries must stop forcibly deporting Syrian refugees to Syria. The resolution also calls on the European Commission to take additional measures to involve local organisations more closely in policy, and to take action against the rapidly escalating water crisis in northern Syria.
In June 2023, Minister of Development Cooperation Gennez announced that an additional ten million euros would be made available for the post-earthquake response in northern Syria.
