Fantastic news! 11.11.11 wins the 22nd edition of De Standaard Solidarity Award!
From over a hundred entries, the jury chose our powerful ad, created in collaboration with communications agency viavictor. With a haunting nod to the iconic Nirvana album Nevermind, we showed a black baby - created by AI - drowning in the Mediterranean Sea, asking: 'Nevermind?'.
The jury was impressed by how we hold up a mirror to our indifference: “At first glance a lovely, recognizable image,” says the jury, “but in fact it is a punch in the stomach. In this way, 11.11.11 “the focus on a drama that is being forgotten.”
A very recognizable image, but also very hard. Yet it is the reality. This week's tragedy - in which twelve people, including a pregnant woman and six children, drowned off the French coast - shows once again our failure to set up a humane migration policy.
And those drownings in the Mediterranean are not unfortunate accidents; they are mainly the result of political choices. In the past 10 years, more than 30.000 people have drowned there.
11.11.11 stands up for humane migration policy
Fleeing is not a choice. People risk their lives in search of safety and a better life. Unfortunately, reception in their own region is often inhumane, and during their journey they are exposed to violence and human rights violations. Moreover, reception and solidarity in the countries of arrival are often hard to find.
