Good news! Argenta has decided to completely remove the American technology company Palantir from all its investment funds. This decision comes after months of pressure from 11.11.11, FairFin and international partners within the Don't Buy into Occupation coalition. It shows that sustained action works.

What is going on with Palantir?

Palantir is a American tech company that develops software for data analysis and surveillance. That technology is used, among other things, used by the Israeli army, for example, to determine targets for bombardments and drone strikes in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, and Iran.

In addition, the company is also under fire for its cooperation with the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE), who is involved in strict migration enforcement and detention.

An important step, but other banks continue to invest.

Today, Argenta goes further than any other Belgian bank by completely banning Palantir from its funds. That is a clear and courageous choice.

Other banks are taking only partial steps for the time being. For example, they have KBC and Degroof Petercam Palantir has been removed from their sustainable funds, but other financial ties with the company remain.

At the same time, research by Follow the Money shows that banks such as ING and BNP Paribas have even expanded their investments in Palantir.

The problem goes much broader than Palantir.

Palantir is not an isolated case. From research of 11.11.11 and partners It appears that banks active in Belgium are still investing billions in companies that contribute to human rights violations in Palestine.

For example, banks invest in:

  • arms companies such as Elbit Systems, supplier to the Israeli army
  • companies that demolish houses such as Caterpillar, whose bulldozers are being used to destroy Palestinian homes.
  • technology companies such as Motorola, which support surveillance and military operations
  • energy companies such as Valero, which supplies fuel for fighter jets

In total, it concerns tens of billions in financial relationships by banks that are also active in Belgium.

In other words: the citizens' savings still flows today to companies involved in genocide, occupation, and other serious violations of international law.

Pressure works and remains necessary

Argenta's decision proves that change is possible when societal pressure increases. But as long as other banks continue to invest in companies that contribute to human rights violations, our work is not finished.

Together with our partners in the Don't Buy into Occupation coalition we continue to put pressure on the financial sector to stop all financial flows to Palantir and similar problematic companies.

For savings must never contribute to war crimes or oppression.
